Primary 2 will be working on one of the yummiest themes of all... Chocolate. Will start off our learning with a set of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory activities and a visit to a Chocolate Museum in Paris. During History, we will then find out about how chocolate went from the Aztecs to our modern day supermarkets. We will also create our own Aztec hot chocolate mug at a ceramics workshop in St Germain-en-Laye. In our Geography sessions, we will learn about where cacao trees grow best by refreshing our knowledge of climates, weather, the equator, longitude and latitude. During our International subject, the students will learn about Fair-trade and other organisations that aim to equitably manage our shared global resources.
During Science, we will carrying out some investigations about nutrition and dental health. The students will then have a major project to work on: make, package, advertise, and sell their own chocolate. On the last Thursday of the term we will have a chocolate factory afternoon, where you can see our
TV advertisements and 'buy' some chocolate. So save a little space over Easter for some Primary 2 Chocolate!
During Literacy, we will polish off our performance poems and record a CD. We will then move on to a very useful unit for our chocolate project: Persuasive text. We will learn about how to grab the viewers attention and persuade them, in different ways- TV, magazines, radio, to buy or try. We will also have some formal debates about chocolate and use persuasive language.
In our Maths sessions, we will start weekly maths investigations based on the topic we are studying that week. We will build on on the topics of: written methods to carry out calculations, money, angles, perimeter, area, negative numbers and fractions. Of course, fraction learning is so much better when we have to convert a recipe for chocolate cookies, then cook them and eat them!
This term in music we will work on orchestrations, where we will play different instruments for one song.The students will also have to compose a piece of music for their chocolate TV advertisement.
So with all this talk of chocolate, we do need to a bit of physical education! So Lucie and I will be bike-riding with the students every Thursday in the forest. We will have a special bike maintenance session on
Tuesday of the first week. The biking session will end with a big ride and picnic in the forest. Then, swimming will start. There are plenty of activities install to work off all that chocolate energy!
