The students were given a scenario to imagine:
Your parents are farmers and to supplement their income your older brothers and sisters go fishing early in the morning. They then go to school and it is your job to take the fish they have caught up the river to your mother, who is selling her vegetables in the market. Then
you have to go to school. You have to keep the fish cold to keep it fresh and away from your clothes so you don’t smell. Five kilograms is too heavy for you to carry 1 mile. You have to design a carrier that will enable you to take this fish to your mother.
The students then worked in 2 groups. One used natural materials and the other used natural materials to build a boat that could carry the 5kg of fish along the river.
After we tested them in the pool. we found that the manmade materials boat was most reliable. Then we thought about our research countries (India, Japan, USA and Kenya) and if most people there could build our boats.
